Charles Warren (Charlie) is the ultimate first responder trainer. Like many ski patrollers, Charlie applies his skills and volunteers his time in more than one endeavor. He has also been an active fire fighter at The Lost Acres Fire Department in Granby since 1966. He has also volunteered his time as a first aider at the Talcott Mountain Music Festival in Simsbury from 1995 to the present. Charlie started his ski patrolling in 1959 at the Springfield Ski Club and was part of the Springfield Hill Captains Team from 1963 to 1969. He passed the Level I Avalanche course in 1964. Charlie came to Ski Sundown in 1970 so he has been a patroller for 50 years this year. Charlie passed Mountain Travel and Rescue Level I in 1977 and became a WEC instructor in 1989. He passed instructor development in 1991, Global Phase II and OEC Phase II in 1993. He has served in several capacities at Sundown and is a past member of the Ski Sundown NSP steering committee. Charlie is believed to be the first person to call for Life Star assistance at Ski Sundown. With a keen eye and a clear voice, Charlie began his Ski Patrol training career when he became an OEC instructor in 1989. It was then that he started training patrollers for both the Sundown “on the hill“ sessions and the CT regional OEC sessions, both of which he continues with today. His love for the training comes through in every thing he does. If you have been in any of Charlie’s training sessions, you have surely heard him say “if you think it can make a difference with this situation, do it”. “If you think giving this injured person oxygen can make a difference, do it”. We are all better Patrollers because of Charlie’s training. |
